There is some confusion when it comes to differentiating between these two fields. It is clear that both require a great ability to use and understand, at least, two languages. Both translators and interpreters have to get familiar with the understanding of the cultures of both the source language and the target language.

It is true that the two have a common goal that is to collect the information of a language and convert it into a second language, however, it is about 2 different processes, so, what is the difference?

  • Translation is written: A document written in a language is rewritten using the target language.

  • Interpretation is oral: It implies the hearing of something spoken, for example, a speech and its oral interpretation in the target language.

Now you know the difference between translation and interpretation, so, next time be careful and don't mix them!
